Can you believe it – honey as a hangover cure!

Yah. Wasn’t I happy when I read this bit of sweet research. Not that I’m a big drinker, but you know sometimes the party monkey is left off the leash, and without my full consent I find myself totally smashed.

Taking a few tablespoons of honey helps speed up your body’s metabolism and provides essential nutrients, all working to combat the dreaded hangover.

How does honey work as a hang over cure?

Honey contains fructose.

Fructose speeds up the oxidation of alcohol within the liver. The NYU Langone Medical Center reveals that taking honey orally can, “increase the body’s ability to metabolise alcohol, thereby limiting intoxication and more rapidly reducing alcohol blood levels.”

Honey contains glucose.

Alcohol causes changes in hormone activities which decreases the availability of glucose. Studies show that alcohol hangover is associated with a decrease in blood glucose concentration, but the relationship between blood glucose concentration and hangover severity is unclear. Taking glucose orally in honey will make more available for the body to process.

Honey (raw) contains immune supporting properties.

Studies show a relationship between immune factors and hangover severity. Taking honey orally will provide essential factors to support the immune system.

Honey is hydrating.

Alcohol contains Ethanol which has a dehydrating effect by causing increased urine production (diuresis). Honey is a humectant, which means it absorbs water which can then be absorbed into the body.

Honey has essential vitamins.

Alcohol causes depletion of Vitamins B, C, plus other vitamins like magnesium, potassium and zinc . These lack of nutrients creates feelings of fatigue, aching and other symptoms. Honey has plenty of these nutrients that are readily absorbed by the body.

Honey has a high energy (kJ) rating.

An alcohol hangover causes fatigue and drowsiness. This is due to your body having to work hard to repair itself from the damage done to cells and the expulsion of chemicals.

Honey has been clinical proven to assist in healing stomach ulcers.

Alcohol stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach causing nausea. Honey is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, antioxidant and free radical scavenging. Honey can have the effect to repair and coat the lining of the intestine to reduce nausea.

This is all good news when I have those accidental nights. However, there is still no clinical proof that honey is a true hang over cure. So as always drink in moderation or even better abstain from the evil sauce.

Order your hangover cure from the online shop. Curative honeys with ginger or turmeric, or try the hair of the dog liqueur honeys.
